At first there is only the magnificence

of rising

straight up, roaring

through a thin indifferent element.

Clothes outgrown, tiny shoes fall

away as the body arrays itself

in faith among the clouds. But soon,

that first engine stutter lifts a hand

to collarbone. In concussive measures

of the blade the chance

of a guttering pause.

Fibrillation.

Our ridiculous carriers tilt and plunge

in the casual way of machines, the eye

a window to ground

that will not let go. Movements

of each pilot’s arm look much like

our own, panic the soft spot

we are all born to.
